Doctor Boogie via... Mystery Mail!

I mentioned the 'Doctor Boogie' Blues 'n' Jazz album only a couple posts back, that I put out, years ago... well, the masters were ruined in a fire in Vancouver, over 15 years ago.. there was NO way I was ever going to replace them...
Or.. so it seemed.. until someone mailed a copy of my work tape to me 'ol Dad! The way I used to record this stuff, was I'd lay down the guitars and maybe bass, and vocals sometimes, and have only a 'kick' track instead of click track.. this (my work tape) I'd take into the studio and add the drums (with a real drummer!), and or rerecord everything, using the tape as a reference... sometimes I'd just dub the tabe directly to multitrack (as i did in this case).
What I got back, in the mail , was that 'work' tape, that I later transferred to MT .. it was the multitrack master that got destroyed in the fire.... The stereo sub-master got wiped over for the next client , and i lost track of the work tape through various moves etc,, until an anonymous mailer sent it back .. and it still sounds OK.. after a while you no longer notice that there's no real drums ... like on the demos I've been posting :)
It's old, too regular ferric tape, and over 25 years old ... so be forwarned. The material was all original, and a lot slicker than my stuff got later on...

What is Audiocandy.....

...and why should i care?
Well, if you like good music, you should...
See, once upon a time, say , in a juke joint down south, maybe.. You'd have a couple guys , or a good band crankin out some raw blues, or something like that.. they'd get to rockin, and the crowd would get to stompin', and the more everybody got into it, the better the band would play, feeding off the crowd..back and forth, like a closed loop.. everybody'd get higher and higher.. but it didn't stop there.. at the end of the evening, the band would get a couple brew or whatever, and start shakin' hands, an sayin hello to everyone... maybe give a couple 78 rpms away, or later on, cassettes, or whatever... everybody'd be happy. They'd wave hello to the guys on the street the next day , or something like that... Somewhere along the way, however, Big Business came along...
Suddenly, the stage got higher.. there was no time to talk to the folks who came to see the show.. 'cuz the band hadda get in their stretch limo to get to the next gig quick.. to pay off their LOAN to the Big Record Company, that was not giving away anymore loss leaders ... the band were 'up there' and the fans were those 'plebes' down there... no closed loop .. can you really see any performance intimacy there, really?
It aint right... it Just Ain't Right...Somebody oughta do something to set things right.... Well, guess what... someone has.. Audiocandy...

....continued in part 2... later on...!

OK y'all HERE IT COMES the late the GREAT!!!!! Freddy King

My absolute number #1 fave guitar player all my life...... Who else do ya ever need to listen to...?

My take on John Lee Hooker (back in '79)

This is how i used to play the blues ... 30 years ago! I did several JLH tunes... Got the nick 'Doctor Boogie' for quite a while... even released an album under that name...

My apologies! Appears that this was, in fact, 1984... it appeared on an independent album release i did called 'Midnight Run"... Ah, well, it was such a long time ago..cells get old an grey.. p.s... when the photo of me posted here on my site was taken 2 years ago, i hadn't been playing for almost 10 years!
I rarely say this, but despite my obviously inexperienced recording skill at the time, I'll stand by this one even now, 25 years later!

Moving day soon...

I'm not going to be posting for a while soon, as I'm moving, and internet access is going to be a challenge as there's no cable where I'm going.. gonna have to improvise! Cheers from Doc...

Everybody needs a good rainy day song...

...and here's mine

I'm gonna (maybe) post this one on Audiocandy too.. I STRONGLY suggest you check it (Audiocandy) out... even if it's only to go to Bob Welch's page instead of mine :)
Worth it...

Bootleg blogs under attack?

I don't mean to worry y'all... but i've been seeing, and have heard from folks who know, that theres things afoot to mess up our boot blogs... Now I don't care about the folks that post hundreds of legit releases and don't even bother to write a single review or comment of any kind... as far as i'm concerned they're just thieves and i have no interest in them.. But those that have genuine reviews, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, the bootleg blogs, are valuable resources, and we, (i'm speaking about most musicians) don't want to lose 'em. We like 'em, we want 'em, we need 'em... See, often, those of us still nailed `to a contract (and i'm NOT!!!!) CAN'T release a lot of this stuff , even if we wanted to... and it's not that we don't like others to hear the inner workings of this stuff, alternate takes, yadda yadda, or that WE don't get inspiration from others also... I'm not sure what to do at this point, and i hope to god I'm wrong, but i thought i'd better pass this on as i heard it.... sorry

OK.. Back to Electric Crunchy morsels!

Here's a nice Kick ass one , i think.. no lyrics, yet, just lotsa guitar

A little disheartinin' ... all 0's for comments, y'all..

i know i'm tryin to get a little more exposure with non-musicians, but even so, it's a slow grind.. especially with so few comments.. i don't have any idea if anyone's out there (insert grand canyon echo sound...). For y'all that haven't heard any of the tunes on here, it doesn't matter, but those that have, and noticed all the players i've known and played with, might be wondering how it is they done never heard of me .... or not... See, it is, i got "The Jinx".. I cant tell ya how many times club owners scratched their heads an said "don't get it..even on a monday with no band we get a full house.. but weren't more than 10 folks here ... and you guys Rocked!". And this even happened in a city while the commonwealth games were being hosted and there was no room on the sidewalks.. So leave a comment if youre so inclined ... Thanks y'all.. gonna post more music now .. no more of this....! Doc
Ps thanks to AOOFC and the Rev Dr.... "ya keep me hangin' on"

Acoustic change of pace...

Just recorded this 10 minutes ago.. a little sloppy., but so what! Lenny Breau's old friend Steve used to ask me to play this one all the time... (miss ya Floody..).. so here it is.. warts an all...

Some Skynard for Y'all!

Here's a clip i found out on the web..
Ya just can't beat a three guitar lineup for a good fat tone live!

Not sayin' here they're all 3 of 'em playin guitar, but more often than not...

OMG! it's woodstocks 40th, and i missed it ..Again!

it wuz 40 years ago today ...well , almost.. that my cousin from holland , and my erstwhile 'babysitter' (i wuzn't that much of a baby seeing as i had a bad crush on this gorgeous blond) went to woodstock and , aopparently, was right in the middle of the action when it was being organized.. Titia was her name... and i think i'll write holland and see if she remembers much about the guy who put the whole thing on... Anything interesting i will pass on, folks.

Quick note..

Anything not directly related to music is on the relevant site now..i.e. pinball on the pinball page.. OS and GUI stuff on the tech page.. See Y'all.. Doc

Hmmm.. what to say about this one...

I don't know if you could really call this a song, but i needed a bass demo at one point, i can't even recall why! I did start out gigging as a bassist, after all ..... Anyways, it may not be one of those meaningful trax, but it does kick, especially near the end

My Take On the Beatles 'Day Tripper'

We used to jam to this all the time, as did a lot of other bands...
It just got more rock and roll all the time... i really do wish i had a live recording of some of our gigs playing this...
All I've got is this.. i recorded it on my 4 track when i was getting bored one day...

Day Tripper

Note! Seems i uploaded an incorrect mix that was pretty 'orrible, folks.
All fixed now... should not blow up any more speakers or brain cells ..right away :)

Moving this one up a bit....

Well, I think it sounds good enough to eat now :) ...

I'm Crying (Good mix)
Remember that i mentioned that almost everything (except the 'Catch' stuff) was recorded (or remixed, in this case..) on either a yamaha 4 track portastudio, or sound with sound on an old reel to reel deck !
So no miracles are possible, remix-wise... !

I'm A Crosscut Saw .. Baby!

Yeah dig man...here's my take on Albert King...
Crosscut Saw

I'd really love *some* feedback

No comments? Admittedly 400 views isn't a lot...but...
Here's a repost... i'd love feedback at least, on this...

Get a Big Spliff , Mon!

Here's some E.C. from the 461 Ocean Blvd sessions that never got released.. a real shame, IMHO....
My old drummer Charlie would love this one! I can still hear him snapping the snare and saying "de ska and raggae beat go here mon!!!!!"
Well, he was from Belize... he had definite ideas about how to play Reggae properly, and who could dare argue with him about it! He had a gold record in South America for playing exactly this...

I'm Crying (Good mix)

Bob Welch on AudioCandy

Bob Welch : audiocandy.com

Shared via AddThis

So yeah, i'm unashamedly a fan of his...ever since Fleetwood Mac's 1971 'Future Games"
Everybody did very well on that album... man, talk about an Underrated album!!

Something Old and Something... er.. Old

A couple of  blues trax...  first one has gotta be the first track i finished.. over 30 years ago... using Sound On Sound,  on an old reel to reel deck.. what a pain!
This is kind  of how i approached blues when i was younger.. i was Very surprised to find a copy still in existence..thought i'd lost it in the fire i was in...

Whisky and Wimmen

And this is 20 years later. back in '98.. Actually, I was quite surprised how similar it sounds to the first... despite 2 decades difference.. but it was recorded on a far more advanced deck.... NOT!
Actually, a four track yamaha that kept breaking down!

Cant Quit You

Pink Floyd as a blues cover band!

I've never , in the past, been able to listen to the very first two recordings by these guys .. that's LucyLeave , and KingBee ....they've only ever been on bootlegs, and the quality has been , frankly, unlistenable...
You'd think some competent audio engineer would  get fed up and rectify the situation, on their own dime, considering the incredible  historical importance of these guys...
Say no more!
sigh.... If you want something done right......

P.S Dave...if you have any issues with this let me know... but check it out first....

The Beach Boys Smile... cult classic or what?

 Worth a listen.. i'd say...

Red Sunsets

World beat with a hard edge... lotsa energy here... i cranked Will's bass right up (otherwise untouched, like all the other files here)...they were all , except some 'Catch' stuff, recorded on old analog gear many moons ago, you know..... The Catch was live in the studio, to two track DAT...

Red Sunsets

Chris sings this one, as he did on most , being the main lyricist and songwriter .. i mostly did the guitar arrangements , the hooks, riffing , etc etc.

Here's an exception ... i added some more guitars some years later on, but it's one of the only ones i wrote from scratch, while in the band ...my own lyrics, so i didn't have to try and remember anyone else's :) ...
This was gonna get airplay, once it was finished... but there was a bit of a shakeup memberwise, and Dan Dye (drums) and Rod Fortin (Bass) parted company with us, and Will Cardinal and Charlie Wade joined ... meaning a completely different sound, and Back! in the studio ...
My nice little song kinda felt out of place suddenly ! ....

Incidentally, this tune is now also further on up the .. er ... page
I'm Crying (Good mix)

I sure do hope that it stays like this...

Pictures appearing and disappearing, added links showing up, and then not, and then mysteriously reappearing... blogging isn't what i had expected (!)
..gonna go dredge up more old recordings now....
