A special treat for y'all!

It was a blustery boxing day, many years ago, in a warm cozy little club in Hackensack, New Jersey, that an entirely unknown Jimi Hendrix recorded this, with Curtis Knight and the Squires, of which he was a member at the time.
Immediately after this, he would be discovered in a club just like this, doing the exact same things...
But this was before anyone knew who he was...
an it smokes...
Here's the first one (i'll post more in a bit...)

DRIVING SOUTH (note.. top quality sound.. ATM calibre!)

Curtis Knight should REALLY get a special mention for how much he supported Jimi in those days... until then Jimi'd been roped in by very strict guidelines as very much a 'sideman'.. but Curtis gave hinm lots of room to show off, and stretch out, and is truly under appreciated for his contribution..
So , THANK YOU, mr Curtis Knight Sir.. from those of us that know!

Repost: my two foghat demos..

Thought i'd just repost this as i've been ill and haven't been able to do much with this blog for a while..
I'll be back folks!
-------------------------------------
In an attempt to throw my hat into the ring for a possibility of getting a gig with Foghat i made a couple demos.. sent them into what i thought was the only Foghat.. i had no idea that there was gonna be TWO Foghats after the dust settled (but not for long, either).. so i don't know if they even got this... But here they are.. I did post em much earlier, but they're remixed and cleaned up..keep in mind they're 20 years old , and on ferric  tapes (it's all i had left)..

P.S. For best results have a good stiff drink and crank it LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 'Public Record' recording method

Comments and/or reviews of my music are the only thing keeping me out of the soup kitchen lines...

Why?
Well, if you go into a record store, and you see an album by someone you've never heard of, and know nothing about, with no liner notes, are you gonna buy it instead of the one with any one of those three?

Any chance i will ever have of getting off the dole and back playing is if somebody knows about my music, not me.. so far nobody does.. still, after 35 years. if someone comes to my page, they will not see any reviews such as 'i like this' or that's good' or 'that sux lemons'.
The reason almost nobody's heard of me after 35 YEARS of gigging is mostly that the press, also, did nothing...
You've heard it said that the only bad press is NO press... well i can attest to that, but in fact the only bad press is no press ABOUT THE MUSIC.
I can distinctly remember the second to last gig that the Alhambra hotel ever held, in Victoria, and we played it that night... the whole entertainment staff of 'Monday' magazine were there... i could see them bangin on the table and digging the boogie we were laying down... all original or remakes...
Not a word was EVER mentioned in that paper..
so nobody ever knew..
anyone coming to my blog will see MY opinion of the songs i post but other than the couple of comments on a couple tunes, by one of the only 4 readers i know about (thank you guys, sincerely...!)
the rest is... well, nobodys gonna take the time out to listen if there isn't a single comment om any of these...

Thiis isn't a hobby... it's what i spent most of my life doing... but if i'm horribly deluded, and these really DO suck, at least id like to know, cuz then it's GONNA be a hobby an i'm hangin it up...
So i'm gonna post a couple that i THOuGHT were good.. in case i really AM deluded...

This ones mostly rythmn with a little lead
BOOGIE No# A-03 (extra strong durability model - warranty extended for the full life of the song)

and this ones mostly lead with a little rythmn

And this one i thought kicked..

Please boycott 'my space'

And here's why...you can view any my space site in even a year old browser, but even a TWO WEEK old revision of camino isn't new enough to log in.. this is not even a personal page, but my band space.. apparently there's 'a whole lot of new features' that can't be seen with old browsers.. well since (in my opinion) that's not true, as they can be 'seen' just fine.. just the security of anyones page is threatened since if you cant log in you cant affect what's hap[pening.. this is just (in my opinion) some new way of applying invasiveness or other suspect software (in my opinion)

Both of my old girlfriends used to love 'swing time'

Now now! there... Shame on you for thinking such a thing... did you really think I was talking about.........
Lawrence Welk ;-)

But this is my 'Swing Time'
And yes, they both really did like it..

I don't think i've posted this one before either... it was recorded in the late 90's and was entirely done on a couple of cassette decks...

P.S. here's an AMAZING bit of trivia about Mr. Welk... between the bubbles, cocktail schwaltz, and endless polkas, his love for Surf Music would surface...
Yes, Surf rock...Astonishingly, he had some of the surf greats on there! Such as the Astronauts, The Chantays, Surfaris, and i think even the Fireballs etc...
....You'll never think of him in the same light again!
i wish more tape had survived of these.. they were the first thing to go when allocating show time... although the show was , for the most part, live , some bits were taped...

Doc is my REAL name

so im faced with a bit of a dilema.. before the innernut it was easy to be doc rock... but it seems that theres a few i seen now i've been online... now i aint gonna change my name legally...
Firstly Doc is, of course short, like Tom for Thomas.. in my case it's DOminiC.. it stuck cuz of all the pharmacological studies etc etc (hey man if ya know any other pharmacy techs, ask them if THEY ever memorized Goodman's and Gilman's ;-)..
Folks just started calling me doc 'rock' cuz around here there was Doowop Doc, steel guitar Doc, an me.. folks would ask 'are ya singer Doc, country Doc, or Rock Doc? when they met me..
So anyways i wuz bored, and thought i'd clear the air..
That's the story, folks...

boy was that interesting (yeah right...)

Please keep Mick Abrahams in yer thoughts an prayers

One of the founders of the whole british scene, back in the 60s... is currently recovering from a heart attack.. right after a serious attemt to up his health (aint it always the way...)
Not only wuz he the original jethro tull guitarist... he was a founder member of blodwyn pig... which i always thought were better than tull anyways...
An he aint even old yet... not really..
he's still got his chops and the more support he gets the sooner he'l be back up an at 'em
Here's one site you can post your support...

To all the snobby "please upgrade' websites

How frikkin DARE you... it YOU GUYS that are RESPONSIBLE for the influx of viruses, worms, and trojans.. by insisting on browsers that are the latest upgrade, (Mine is a MONTH!!! old), and subsequently forcing folks to upgrade to the NEWEST UNSTABLE OS's, you're ENCOURAGING the growth of opportunistic malware....
Instead write your pages by people who DONT have to get home at 5 so the ol lady wont have a baseball bat at trhe door, or fols whoi just wanna get drunk after work....
Incidentally... for y'all it's  MY SPACE
that's causing the problem... and at least i'm not alone... there's a half million other pissed off people!

Things are movin again..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Y'all are gonna be the first to know... everytime there's progress on this one I'm lettin ya all know...
Sometimes the hardest thing in starting a new project , is finding the RIGHT direction to take it.. that is, something where everything goes smoothly as tho it's meant, where the songs are as good as they could possibly be, and everything is just , well, right!
So, i done FOUND it...
It's a three guitar lineup.. doin the old southern thing.. with blues, country, rock, and fusion all mashed up an together.
Even original bands gotta do a little bit of remakes .. it ain't 'covers' when an original band does it, it's 'remakes'...
although with three guitarists theres gonna be enough material for a good two hour set, aint no reason i shouldn't consider stuff by , say , the outlaws, or skynard,...
Man i'm just dyin to give 'high tide and green grass' a go....
....more to come.
Comment on this one are... like... go for it!!!

Oh.. a P.S. here... i don't know about food licencing regs... i'll have to check that one out... butr I'm thinking at every gig i should see that we have a couple hundred bucks worth of hot fried chicken wings to give away, done right there on the spot....
What d'y'all think?

And youll never believe what kind of day i've had.. and i can't even steer you to my blog that tells ya... sometimes you really ARE powerless......

The entire security of the net (This affects You and Me!)

A serious note here...
Gone are the days that you had to remember one or two passwords to log in to a couple of sites... these days it's not unusual to have HUNDREDS of different logins and passes (and they SHOULD not all be the same!)
Well, i am sickened by one of the few areas where Apple (yes Apple) DROPS THE FRIKKIN BALL....
ever since i started using Mac OSX... i've had random 'disappearing logins' where i've had to go back and try to remember what the combo was...this DESPITE in safari, camino, etcetc having enabled 'remember'.. this is supposed to be in something called a 'keychain' but they simply disappear.
THIS IS SERIOUS.
If the whole move to 'cloud computing' is even gonna work.. this shit CANNOT happen..
Even though OSX is free from malware THAT WE KNOW OF, compared to, say, windows, how is it any less of a security threat if you don't know why your login and passwords are suddenly gone and need to be re-entered from scratch.. how do i know that it isn't because they've been harvested....?
At least with windows the malware is in yer face... and if it's NOT malware then it's INEXCUSABLY bad design from Apple.
When you select 'save this password' it should be locked down in stone... I'm not talking about online cookies here... they seem more reliable, and that is even scarier, that they should work when OSX's own capacity to save these fails...

blame CONDUIT.... apparently every site that has availed itself of its toolbar cannot load login info untul the toolbar has loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And has anyone ever been able to get 'dont show this again' on that toolbar to ever work?
Is there a real security issue here?

Why other musicians hate my guts...

is beyond me... but it's mostly been true. REAL people get along with me just fine.
In fact, non-musicians are disconcertingly nice to me... i've had a bank account where i've gone in and they've just reversed over 100$ in OD charges 'cuz i was late and said so..! several times..!
But musicians... well not ALL of 'em, but most..
The stuff i've heard said after the fact, behind my back... oooh...nasty nasty..
Why am i on this rant?
Well, i've been contacting , or trying to, several I used to know.
and, ya know, I've thought about 'the jinx' that I've had, where bad things used to happen to me for no apparent reason at all...
It occured to me that nothing happens in isolation... it has to be DONE by someone...or...in fact... NOT done..as in this case:
While I was with this woman some years ago, the big issue confronting me was my inability to seem to get any press whatsoever.
Well, after a couple years together, we seperated, and she ended up with the fella that had the local Music news, with reviews of evertyone's gigs, bios, ratings etc etc.
Do you think i ever got a mention?

So anyways, it occurred to me today that it's an idiot move to try to build any kind of bridges with the very ones who turned the knife after jabbing it in the ole back...
What d'yall think... Waste of time? Or am I better than that?

Oh incidentally, I'd like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Smiley brothers (Todd and Jeff) of 'The Bratz', who've never been anything but perfect gennlmen... It's exceptions like these that , in fact, allowed me to carry on!

Go see 'em if you're on vancouver Island... ya can't lose on that one!

(Update) Well.. I guess it wasn't an idiot move after all.. only the good ones have responded.. the assholes have stayed away!

When records used to be sold by vacuum cleaner and sewing machine companies!

These were re-recorded and not original versions, as was common in those days, to avoid having to actually PAY MONEY to the actual original artists..
so i wonder who they got as a patsy in the studio to do their dirty work..
Meaning , who is it?
I've always been curious...

Ummm ... does this help me wanna get them?

I thought I'd go get nme some Grado or Sennheiser reference phones, seeing as I need them.. then i remembered Klipsch.... remember Klipsch speakers anyone ?... 300 frikin pounds and ya needed a room bigger than the school auditorium to make them really work..(they were monsters, certainly some of the best ever... thats true) OK wow they have a website i discover, and now they seem to specialize in Headphones??? .
So, at first im interested , cuz they're much cheaper than the grados and sennheisers... then i see this video... i suppose it's funny...

When things go wrong (So wrong with you)...

Firstly, if anyone has any problem hearing any of these audio files PLEASE LET ME KNOW.. even though I've tested them in a half dozen different browsers, on several different OS''s, there still appear to be folks with problems.. (Oh the humanity!)

p.s. actually, I can't test it in Internet explorer cuz the MS defaults engine has hijacked it again.. and it 's reset itself to MSN as the home page.. and it wont actually open the page , it just freezes.. so I cant reset the home page.
I don't think i need to actually say anything else.. except if a third party app did this, you know what it would be called?

So.. OK my stuff again (like almost all the other posts)
First is definitely jazz (sorta:).. if it aint it's only 'cuz it makes sense and aint jarring, dystonic, or achordal (!)
DOC"S BOSS NOVA

The next is blooz.. i hardly ever post stuff that i haven't written myself, from scratch, but old standards are certainly an exception...
IT HURTS ME TOO

OOps... something happened with that last one when importing it. lemme fix it.. be right back...!
Fixed, sorta.. the transition i worked on from the mono to stereo in the first verse was butchered.. its supposed to be smooth as silk... musta lost the final mix along the way :)
Unfortunately, all my apps went crazy at the same time!
I usually work on my files at between 3000 and 12000 kbps, so as not to lose any data... when exporting they're SUPPOSED to convert to 1411.. but they decided not to cooperate!

a foot note.. the second one is also from 1984's 'Doctor Boogie ' album.. sadly, it only ever got university radio play before the masters were destroyed in a fire.. but i gave (quite) a few away.. so i got a cassette copy back a few weeks ago, which is where this came from....

and this is whatever IT is...
I CANT QUIT YOU

On so-called Remasters.. mickboys, ebbets, etc

I've had a chance to have a listen to some of these needle drops over the last year, and i'm still undecided.
Don't misunderstand me. VINYL SOUNDS BETTER!
*When* its STILL on vinyl and has never been Digitized.
once you digitally rip it you lose the advantage. (more about why that is, later)
I think the only advantage in digital format of good needle drops is the possibility of getting one step closer to the master, or original mixes that have been lost by official remastering..
What do I mean?.. Well, when vinyl used to be pressed, the master was copied, and a bunch of sub masters were made for cassette. Unfortunately, more often than not, the vinyl stampers were ALSO made from the Sub-master .. mostly because they DO wear out, and need to be done again.
These sub-masters were, often, also the ones used for transfer to digital, at least in the beginning of the digital age.
A good example is 'Future Games' of Fleetwood Mac. The CD has a DROP-OUT! in it. Now I'm pretty sure the Master Tape Doesn't (at least , I hope).
Now, I think that on the first run, they in fact used the master for the first stamper...very often the case..so if you find a first pressing, mint, and do a needle drop off it, on adequate pro gear, you've got something significantly better than the current CD. But not due to any advantages in the sound of vinyl.. if it's digitized.. digital signals work on an on-off format ..where half the sound is, in fact, dead silence. your brain fills in the missing gaps. If everyone's brain worked the same I guess it wouldn't be an issue, but a digital recording is gonna sound different to everyone, in theory...not so you'd notice, tho, erxcept 'it sounds harsh, or dull', or however you'd interpret it.
So what am I saying about the unofficial 'remasters' (i.e. needle-drops) out there?
Well, first of all, Ebbett's wins the cake.. he's found the correct reason to do them (original pressings) and doesn't 'EQ' them or sweeten in any way, just uses top level gear to record them. Mickboy's also are recorded superbly, but the extra eq'ing done in an analog fashion, I don't think, helps at all, because they're all converted to digital, and if they're gonna be digitized anyways, it would be better to do it digitally, because there's control you just can't acheive with even the best analog gear. I'm glad they're out there... I just wish that original pressings of some of the less distributed artists were ripped from vinyl first- pressings (such as the aforementioned 'future games').
I did a whole slew of 'em myself, as far as preserving my collection of first pressings.. I used to be an avid record collector for extremely rare recording.. by which I mean, that if you collect EXTREMELY rare vinyl, i wouldn't be surprised if you had one of my old ones in your collection. Like, Freddy King '24 vocals and instrumentals', 'The Fireballs' canadian issue, etc..
I paid my mortgage for three years selling em all off... to a Record Dealer! (who sold em off all over the world...
Had enough writing for now... more (and some new recordings of mine ) next time.....

Mystery Tune Contest For Y'all and WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Congrats to the Rev.Dr.Moller THC. Bar. etc...
...and what took you so long.....!

Here's a tune by one of the true MONSTERS of guitar... this one goes way back, tho, and see if anyone can guess it.. WHO IS IT?????? The winner will be the one with the correct answer.. er... duh... So what d'ya get , other than a warm fuzzy feelin' inside.. Well, lifetime free admittance to my gigs... OK that's a tough one, seeing as they're never announced ahead of time.. Normal booking practices for a band that make almost everything up on the spot for two hours straight, just don't apply... But also a Lossless copy of the stones' 'Midnight Beat' Boot "Acetates"! (yer choice of FLAC or whatever else...) (It's not out there in cyberspace!) Got yer moter runnin' NOW?

Mystery Tune

P.S. I'm not offering 'Acetates lossless' to any boot sites for at least 90 days after the contest end.. otherwise it'd trivialize it.. and what'd be the point.. but if nobody gets even close... i'm gonna help SOMEONE cheat :)

Here's another from the same LP...
HONKY TONK
if anyone still wants to hear them, links are now at the bottom of the page...

So now there's only 2 posts per page... (Update...so maybe 3...)

Your gonna have to dig in the 'older posts' link to see what's come before (Highly recommended!)
This is so as to make everything load as quickly as possible .. I hate sluggish internet, and sluggish computers...
We're still in the tech dark ages, ya know...

In only 20 years .. the concept of 'waiting for a page to load' will seem ludicrous.. as will the concept of computer errors .. but this will require the obsolete silicon chip to go the way of the dinosaur .. light storage and tachyon based circuitry will finally solve the problem..
and as far as dinosaurs... i wont even get into the PR hassle caused by the succesful cloning of Tyrannosaurus REX :)..
p.s. if ya got an old IBM 5100, pack it carefully away and keep it safe... someone's coming back for it (has a useful tech advantage nonexistent in the 2060s)
... just a sideways spin for y'all while i wait for the moving van to get everything into my new digs...

If Becker and Fagan's stuff can be called Jazz.....

.....Then This Must Be Too. ;-)
Endless Quest eons ants heard

========
This next one was recorded in front of a bunch of friends with just a strat plugged into a marshall, and a wah pedal and volume pedal both at the same time, as well as a delay of some sort... better call Owsley for this one.. tho. I was showing em what i used to do every New Year's at Midnite, when I'd open the door and point the marshall outside.. did it for decades , too...

========
Will Ya Pleeez Hurry It Up In There??

These are all from my old Malaspina Jazz Studies Course days ... but that don't make 'em Jazz...
But , as I said , if Becker and Fagan are, then the first one must be too..

I'm Gonna Learn Y'all Some Truth here .. in the Blooz

Yup... lesson number 1 git out yer notebooks an yer shot glasses now..
pour a stiff one an take notes..
... Got ICE in yer stiff one? No? Really? Well....
Here's Some ICE for y'all!!

Albert Collins shows y'all How it's done..
ICEMAN

====================
So now yer all learnin here...
This lesson aint just Albert (although he's the undisputable star of this gig..)
But i want ya yto listen to the rythm section... to hear how it's done when it's done RIGHT..
First .. The Bass.. as a former bassist I can tell ya that he's NAILED it.. the tone is right, with just the right amount of pre-amp buffer, for a little bite.
His timing is glued to the drums, in particular the kick...
He has all the triplets in exactly the right places, and i think he may even have a dropped D for that extra low punch (or maybe a 5 sting with a low B, if anyone knows help me out here!)
The drums are pretty obvious what he's doin.. just enough an no more!
The hammond (sounds like a B3) has nice fat chords, filling but not fattening!
And the horns coulda been on any stax record (and Stax is an advanced education all of it's own!)
... Nuff said!
------------
... i have only one thing to say about the new Beatles remasters...
..wuz the past remaster 'Past Masters' remastered, or wuz the Past Masters remaster a Master remaster?

Freddy King Gets Funky (doing James Brown)

Here's another one of Freddy's that's workin.. Ya can tell by when he's smilin!.. (aint that always the way tho...)

On the nature of friends, aquaintances, and mythologies...

I recently sent a note to someone to join a pro site (it's not important who, at this point).. and it was forcing me to rethink my past, and the mythologies we all build up over a lifetime... It was, in the note, 'an old friend of so-sos, who i got drunk with a couple of times... Well, first of all, getting drunk with someone doesn't make a friend... i know that :) so, maybe, poor choice of words... But I've had run-ins when I was young, maybe 30 or so years ago, with several 'famous' folks.. some of whom i know for sure were who they said they were, and some, who, perhaps , were not! At any rate... i, at the time, was young and impressionable, and so believed it, when they said who they were.. eventually, one goes through a lifetime building up this mythology based on the flimsiest of evidence... Anyways...this particular fella... (lets call him David, for now) insisted he had a band that i admired... but moaned about it breaking up... then didn't talk about music the rest of the night... just girls girls an more girls... After puttin myself on the line.. i realized i had no reason at all to believe it was him at all...but i'd spent a lifetime cherishing the memory of it as though it really was him... I think we have to be careful that the mythologies we build up over a lifetime are , in fact, based on truth... Just some random thoughts here..... Next post... Music Again!!!

Moving Day! My New Digs...

Doctor Boogie via... Mystery Mail!

I mentioned the 'Doctor Boogie' Blues 'n' Jazz album only a couple posts back, that I put out, years ago... well, the masters were ruined in a fire in Vancouver, over 15 years ago.. there was NO way I was ever going to replace them...
Or.. so it seemed.. until someone mailed a copy of my work tape to me 'ol Dad! The way I used to record this stuff, was I'd lay down the guitars and maybe bass, and vocals sometimes, and have only a 'kick' track instead of click track.. this (my work tape) I'd take into the studio and add the drums (with a real drummer!), and or rerecord everything, using the tape as a reference... sometimes I'd just dub the tabe directly to multitrack (as i did in this case).
What I got back, in the mail , was that 'work' tape, that I later transferred to MT .. it was the multitrack master that got destroyed in the fire.... The stereo sub-master got wiped over for the next client , and i lost track of the work tape through various moves etc,, until an anonymous mailer sent it back .. and it still sounds OK.. after a while you no longer notice that there's no real drums ... like on the demos I've been posting :)
It's old, too regular ferric tape, and over 25 years old ... so be forwarned. The material was all original, and a lot slicker than my stuff got later on...

TOO MANY POTS ON THE BOILER

What is Audiocandy.....

...and why should i care?
Well, if you like good music, you should...
See, once upon a time, say , in a juke joint down south, maybe.. You'd have a couple guys , or a good band crankin out some raw blues, or something like that.. they'd get to rockin, and the crowd would get to stompin', and the more everybody got into it, the better the band would play, feeding off the crowd..back and forth, like a closed loop.. everybody'd get higher and higher.. but it didn't stop there.. at the end of the evening, the band would get a couple brew or whatever, and start shakin' hands, an sayin hello to everyone... maybe give a couple 78 rpms away, or later on, cassettes, or whatever... everybody'd be happy. They'd wave hello to the guys on the street the next day , or something like that... Somewhere along the way, however, Big Business came along...
Suddenly, the stage got higher.. there was no time to talk to the folks who came to see the show.. 'cuz the band hadda get in their stretch limo to get to the next gig quick.. to pay off their LOAN to the Big Record Company, that was not giving away anymore loss leaders ... the band were 'up there' and the fans were those 'plebes' down there... no closed loop .. can you really see any performance intimacy there, really?
It aint right... it Just Ain't Right...Somebody oughta do something to set things right.... Well, guess what... someone has.. Audiocandy...

....continued in part 2... later on...!

OK y'all HERE IT COMES the late the GREAT!!!!! Freddy King

My absolute number #1 fave guitar player all my life...... Who else do ya ever need to listen to...?

My take on John Lee Hooker (back in '79)

This is how i used to play the blues ... 30 years ago! I did several JLH tunes... Got the nick 'Doctor Boogie' for quite a while... even released an album under that name...

My apologies! Appears that this was, in fact, 1984... it appeared on an independent album release i did called 'Midnight Run"... Ah, well, it was such a long time ago..cells get old an grey.. p.s... when the photo of me posted here on my site was taken 2 years ago, i hadn't been playing for almost 10 years!
I rarely say this, but despite my obviously inexperienced recording skill at the time, I'll stand by this one even now, 25 years later!

Moving day soon...

I'm not going to be posting for a while soon, as I'm moving, and internet access is going to be a challenge as there's no cable where I'm going.. gonna have to improvise! Cheers from Doc...

Everybody needs a good rainy day song...

...and here's mine

I'm gonna (maybe) post this one on Audiocandy too.. I STRONGLY suggest you check it (Audiocandy) out... even if it's only to go to Bob Welch's page instead of mine :)
Worth it...

Bootleg blogs under attack?

I don't mean to worry y'all... but i've been seeing, and have heard from folks who know, that theres things afoot to mess up our boot blogs... Now I don't care about the folks that post hundreds of legit releases and don't even bother to write a single review or comment of any kind... as far as i'm concerned they're just thieves and i have no interest in them.. But those that have genuine reviews, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, the bootleg blogs, are valuable resources, and we, (i'm speaking about most musicians) don't want to lose 'em. We like 'em, we want 'em, we need 'em... See, often, those of us still nailed `to a contract (and i'm NOT!!!!) CAN'T release a lot of this stuff , even if we wanted to... and it's not that we don't like others to hear the inner workings of this stuff, alternate takes, yadda yadda, or that WE don't get inspiration from others also... I'm not sure what to do at this point, and i hope to god I'm wrong, but i thought i'd better pass this on as i heard it.... sorry

OK.. Back to Electric Crunchy morsels!

Here's a nice Kick ass one , i think.. no lyrics, yet, just lotsa guitar

A little disheartinin' ... all 0's for comments, y'all..

i know i'm tryin to get a little more exposure with non-musicians, but even so, it's a slow grind.. especially with so few comments.. i don't have any idea if anyone's out there (insert grand canyon echo sound...). For y'all that haven't heard any of the tunes on here, it doesn't matter, but those that have, and noticed all the players i've known and played with, might be wondering how it is they done never heard of me .... or not... See, it is, i got "The Jinx".. I cant tell ya how many times club owners scratched their heads an said "don't get it..even on a monday with no band we get a full house.. but weren't more than 10 folks here ... and you guys Rocked!". And this even happened in a city while the commonwealth games were being hosted and there was no room on the sidewalks.. So leave a comment if youre so inclined ... Thanks y'all.. gonna post more music now .. no more of this....! Doc
Ps thanks to AOOFC and the Rev Dr.... "ya keep me hangin' on"

Acoustic change of pace...

Just recorded this 10 minutes ago.. a little sloppy., but so what! Lenny Breau's old friend Steve used to ask me to play this one all the time... (miss ya Floody..).. so here it is.. warts an all...

Some Skynard for Y'all!

Here's a clip i found out on the web..
Ya just can't beat a three guitar lineup for a good fat tone live!

Not sayin' here they're all 3 of 'em playin guitar, but more often than not...

OMG! it's woodstocks 40th, and i missed it ..Again!

it wuz 40 years ago today ...well , almost.. that my cousin from holland , and my erstwhile 'babysitter' (i wuzn't that much of a baby seeing as i had a bad crush on this gorgeous blond) went to woodstock and , aopparently, was right in the middle of the action when it was being organized.. Titia was her name... and i think i'll write holland and see if she remembers much about the guy who put the whole thing on... Anything interesting i will pass on, folks.

Quick note..

Anything not directly related to music is on the relevant site now..i.e. pinball on the pinball page.. OS and GUI stuff on the tech page.. See Y'all.. Doc

Hmmm.. what to say about this one...

I don't know if you could really call this a song, but i needed a bass demo at one point, i can't even recall why! I did start out gigging as a bassist, after all ..... Anyways, it may not be one of those meaningful trax, but it does kick, especially near the end

My Take On the Beatles 'Day Tripper'

We used to jam to this all the time, as did a lot of other bands...
It just got more rock and roll all the time... i really do wish i had a live recording of some of our gigs playing this...
All I've got is this.. i recorded it on my 4 track when i was getting bored one day...

Day Tripper

Note! Seems i uploaded an incorrect mix that was pretty 'orrible, folks.
All fixed now... should not blow up any more speakers or brain cells ..right away :)

Moving this one up a bit....

Well, I think it sounds good enough to eat now :) ...

I'm Crying (Good mix)
Remember that i mentioned that almost everything (except the 'Catch' stuff) was recorded (or remixed, in this case..) on either a yamaha 4 track portastudio, or sound with sound on an old reel to reel deck !
So no miracles are possible, remix-wise... !

I'm A Crosscut Saw .. Baby!

Yeah dig man...here's my take on Albert King...
Crosscut Saw

I'd really love *some* feedback

No comments? Admittedly 400 views isn't a lot...but...
Here's a repost... i'd love feedback at least, on this...

Get a Big Spliff , Mon!

Here's some E.C. from the 461 Ocean Blvd sessions that never got released.. a real shame, IMHO....
My old drummer Charlie would love this one! I can still hear him snapping the snare and saying "de ska and raggae beat go here mon!!!!!"
Well, he was from Belize... he had definite ideas about how to play Reggae properly, and who could dare argue with him about it! He had a gold record in South America for playing exactly this...

I'm Crying (Good mix)

I don't have a problem with either of these two...except that 'One Day' still has no vocals!

Bob Welch on AudioCandy

Bob Welch : audiocandy.com

Shared via AddThis

So yeah, i'm unashamedly a fan of his...ever since Fleetwood Mac's 1971 'Future Games"
Everybody did very well on that album... man, talk about an Underrated album!!

Something Old and Something... er.. Old

A couple of  blues trax...  first one has gotta be the first track i finished.. over 30 years ago... using Sound On Sound,  on an old reel to reel deck.. what a pain!
This is kind  of how i approached blues when i was younger.. i was Very surprised to find a copy still in existence..thought i'd lost it in the fire i was in...

Whisky and Wimmen

And this is 20 years later. back in '98.. Actually, I was quite surprised how similar it sounds to the first... despite 2 decades difference.. but it was recorded on a far more advanced deck.... NOT!
Actually, a four track yamaha that kept breaking down!

Cant Quit You

Pink Floyd as a blues cover band!

I've never , in the past, been able to listen to the very first two recordings by these guys .. that's LucyLeave , and KingBee ....they've only ever been on bootlegs, and the quality has been , frankly, unlistenable...
You'd think some competent audio engineer would  get fed up and rectify the situation, on their own dime, considering the incredible  historical importance of these guys...
Say no more!
sigh.... If you want something done right......

P.S Dave...if you have any issues with this let me know... but check it out first....

The Beach Boys Smile... cult classic or what?

 Worth a listen.. i'd say...

Red Sunsets

World beat with a hard edge... lotsa energy here... i cranked Will's bass right up (otherwise untouched, like all the other files here)...they were all , except some 'Catch' stuff, recorded on old analog gear many moons ago, you know..... The Catch was live in the studio, to two track DAT...

Red Sunsets

Chris sings this one, as he did on most , being the main lyricist and songwriter .. i mostly did the guitar arrangements , the hooks, riffing , etc etc.

Here's an exception ... i added some more guitars some years later on, but it's one of the only ones i wrote from scratch, while in the band ...my own lyrics, so i didn't have to try and remember anyone else's :) ...
This was gonna get airplay, once it was finished... but there was a bit of a shakeup memberwise, and Dan Dye (drums) and Rod Fortin (Bass) parted company with us, and Will Cardinal and Charlie Wade joined ... meaning a completely different sound, and Back! in the studio ...
My nice little song kinda felt out of place suddenly ! ....

Incidentally, this tune is now also further on up the .. er ... page
I'm Crying (Good mix)

I sure do hope that it stays like this...

Pictures appearing and disappearing, added links showing up, and then not, and then mysteriously reappearing... blogging isn't what i had expected (!)
..gonna go dredge up more old recordings now....

But...me amp goes up to 11 ...

Here's some ass kickin' crunch

OK.. slow easy groovcs ... never did finish any vocals, but why?
First one was a demo to join Foghat... didn't take, cuz there was too many Foghats... Roger Earl had one., and Lonesome Dave had one... sent it into Dave's management, but he was sick (and has since died... what a loss!!!!).

http://www.4shared.com/file/129078382/4726577f/Highway__Killing_me_.html

Next isn't quite a demo, but rather goes way back.... everybody used to jam to 'daytripper'.. These things always morph into originals....Myles (April Wine) out east turned it into a real kickass tune "I want to rock', but me, i just added new grooves and kept it as a remake,, when i wuz in a band out west....

http://www.4shared.com/file/129078384/ae45f24a/Daytripper.html

And finally...
when i went country (and i sure do like Atkins and Duane Eddy!!!)...i had a demo... learned a lot from my original guitar teacher, who became president of the country music assn of BC.. he showed me how to play Yes's 'Siberian Khatru' with both the guitar and keyboards parts at the same time (!)

http://www.4shared.com/file/129078373/b7b97b26/_Thang_1.html

So is this here a makeup, y'all?
Doc

OK fixed links...and wuddami doing with filesharing anyways?

Seeing as I got my own FTP site...i have no idea why all my links are even on 4shared... i will remedy this soon, then.... The crappy mix of 'eat this ' is fixed..now everything is gonna be top level (for a basement demo :)... as it shoulda been right off....
Hey,ya'll, new site, i know.. but if ya don't have a listen ya really ARE missin out.....
I warned ya....

Finally Joined Dime!!!!!!!!!!!

About time too... but i Still didn't find the boot that's got Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan trading lix... (that's 'Kiln House in S.F. 1970', for you uneducated folks...)...
I doubt Bob's got a copy (Bob Welch has a cool website...ya gotta see it!! http://www.b*bwelch.com).. but i could always ask...
Anyone out there???
remember to replace the * with a o...apparently there's monsters out there in the dark....

Eat this...

soooo.. i hadda put Something up, seeing as i wuz so tardy....
i got that evil smile of 1 whose put the cat in the pidgin house.......
Doc

http://www.4shared.com/file/129078365/47c1ef52/Eat_This.html

Stuff....

While I'm gettin ready here i'm getting inspired by the Who... listenin to a submaster of hooligans... an old comp from years ago... really is a good mixin' training ground , you know... listen to baba o'reilly and you'll realize all the parts are basic... and even tho the synth sequencing is all over the map, it's only a matter of timing...as long as the timing's good, three quarters of all notes are gonna work :) ... Just lock in and it'll be all rite!!

CU soon .... Doc

I'm still here...

I know this doesn't look good... having had this blog up for almost a month, and no embedded music, or new links, etc... it's not a pro approach, i know.... ;(. Blame Apple and their unwieldy approach to their computers... resetting my permissions and restoring my defaults, so I can get some serious work done has been a long, arduous task... ohh, for an SGI workstation right about now.... For multimedia, really, there isn't anything else now, usable, for us po' folks, but macs, but i DON'T find them "intuitive" or 'easy to use', at least when things start to screw up!
Gonna bust a move , tho, to get things movin'... like... SOON!!!
Doc

Bad luck breather... Getting Busy!

Well..seems as tho the bad shit's taken a rest .. i'll be able to post again. Still learning how to embed lix on the page... it's a bit much to expect you to download something without having a clue of what you're getting, and only three entries so far, and , what, one pic ... hey man, i'm NEW...so gimme a break :)... This site's gonna kick Ass soon enough... I guaran tea it (offer not valid in NMW, CC and any other state with a little ole lady with massive honkers wavin a flag sayin "take mew home, pleez ").
Soon, Eh...

Saturday, August 22, 2009

No music today..been in ..er geek mode..

just a quik post here...right after i started this blog...my windoze peecee got this... 'one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency' ... scasndisk ran for a very much longer time than usual while doing "repairs" ..
Uh huh you guessed it.... unreadable... two and a half TB of #s@8!3aª¶∞s¢∞¶ÂªÂºÂº-N6™∞§¶.
If that weren't bad enough, after a Quicktime update on the mac, it wouldn't load the os, and i lost all my settings (my prefs) and my permissions got all messed up... i have had to re-enter ALL my serial numbers and reg data for E_V_E_R_Y program as it would not read my old ones.. taken over a week to fix all this.. so posts soon , again... but, for now.....

Sunday, August 9, 2009

And another......

OK here's one that requires copious amounts of alcohol.. (takes a break for a good tall glass of cider).
Well, I'm back... here's one of Doc Rock from 1999....
Usually when making demos, most musicians just put a bare bones thang on tape..some of us, however, like to make heavily overdubbed multi guitar layered opuses to show what we think it should be like ... hah.. we never learn..do we...
I ain't gonna tell ya what it wuz recorded on cause you'll never believe me... but trust me on this ..it's all pre-digital.
it['s a longer one at maybe 8 minutes, but it doesn't even have a lead lick until 5 minutes into... and it doesn't kick ass untill 7 minutes (IMHO) (Rock and roll is Rythmn guitar anyways... unless yer a killer lead player it's all just masturbation...).
Get good an drunk 4 this one... and CRANK it...
Sorry... no vocals
Hey copyright...again...but feel free to post it if ya feel....
Doc

http://www.4shared.com/file/124036158/6551a471/Boogie_No_A03.html

OK first..."The Catch"

As promised.. heres some starters...
This first is called "Red Sunsets" from a band called 'The Catch" frum 15 years ago ... dismantled by a wild tall blond ex-model who caused us a lotta trouble ... but it wuz hot sh*t while it lasted (hey and the band weren't bad either :).
This lineup featured Charlie Wade (Mr. Smooth...) on drums, Will Cardinal on monster bass (Hi Will...) , Chris Sherlock as Rythm Guitar and Main Wordsmith / Singer, and of course Me me me me :) as Riffmaster and Lead Lix...
We walked into the studio and nailed it in almost all first takes.
It never got released however cuz the Catch busted up soon after (to quote Charlie... "You a Good Guitar , mon , but i not gonna be in a bann while your with dat woman!")
.
Here it is..,.
http://www.4shared.com/file/124036156/82e98976/Red_Sunsets____.html

And , hey, duh... copyright reserved...hey? So don't mess with it...ya can give it away all ya want but we wrote it, ..and officialy it's copyright 1994 Chris Sherlock (hey why do the guys who write the words get all the credit?)

Uh... first post...

Been digging thru old boxes and have run into a lot of old recordings going back 25 years..
Many I thought were gone for good in a fire I was in, in Vancouver, at the Austin Hotel...

Hullo... I'm Doc Rock.. the Original ..been around playing for .. er... many years now..
I'm gonna post some of my stuff, some of the guys I've played with, or the bands they've been in, or whatever i think is just plain and wayout kool.

I'll leak out stuff about me, or not.. when and if im in the mood.. and/or about the folks i've played with..or not :)
More to come i promise...
