Congrats to the Rev.Dr.Moller THC. Bar. etc...
...and what took you so long.....!
Here's a tune by one of the true MONSTERS of guitar... this one goes way back, tho, and see if anyone can guess it.. WHO IS IT?????? The winner will be the one with the correct answer.. er... duh... So what d'ya get , other than a warm fuzzy feelin' inside.. Well, lifetime free admittance to my gigs... OK that's a tough one, seeing as they're never announced ahead of time.. Normal booking practices for a band that make almost everything up on the spot for two hours straight, just don't apply... But also a Lossless copy of the stones' 'Midnight Beat' Boot "Acetates"! (yer choice of FLAC or whatever else...) (It's not out there in cyberspace!) Got yer moter runnin' NOW?
Mystery Tune
P.S. I'm not offering 'Acetates lossless' to any boot sites for at least 90 days after the contest end.. otherwise it'd trivialize it.. and what'd be the point.. but if nobody gets even close... i'm gonna help SOMEONE cheat :)
Here's another from the same LP...
HONKY TONK
if anyone still wants to hear them, links are now at the bottom of the page...

Jimmy Page!?
Hyuk! Not even in the ballpark... but i betcha Jimmy would cite HIM as an influence... :)
I thought I remembered hearing something really early from him years ago that didn't sound anything like the stuff he got famous for and this track reminded me of it, so I gave it a shot! :)
Well, Jimmy recorded on so many different sessions back in the day,in all different styles, that he probably DID record something sonding like this.. but it's not him...
hey.. try again.. ya could have heard it once years ago and who it was is just buried in yer subconcious!
Cheers!
I would like to have a crack at this but I can't get it to play, not sure what the problem is either, something with my computer. Any ideas? Cheers.
I've added a direct link for the tune at the list on the right.. Also here....HTH
Mystery Tune
Thanks for the link. I'm just gonna chew it over for a while, this is a tricky one and I don't want to just jump in with my first choice.
Yeah, a tricky one indeed and I am almost sure I heard it before although it was many years ago...
I'd love to give it another shot, but I can't remember any details no matter how hard I'm trying - DANG!!!! :)
All I can remember is that HIM was playing in someone's backing band back then and thus did not release this track as a solo effort... If this should not be true about this tune, it probably isn't what I remember....
This may help: it did , in fact come out under his name on the pickwick label
Not really... :)
I mean, everybody and his sister has released stuff on Pickwick. The only name I am always associating with the label is Lou Reed (or Lewis Reed as he was calling himself back then), but as far as I remember he didn't release more than a few songs under his own name and on top of it all, this "surfy" sound doesn't really make me think of him at all....
Thanks for the hint though! Good luck everyone!!
This is really tough. The style is familiar but I can't pinpoint the player. I used to get this from a friend all the time, he would put a tune on and ask "Who's this then?" I've not had much time to study this as I've just started a new job. I've rejected Freddie King, Lonnie Mack, Roy Buchanan and many other names. It sounds mid 60's to me and there's two guitars. I know Albert King played with Booker T so that would give me Steve Cropper on the 2nd guitar and account for the organ. I'm not confident that it is Albert King as I've got a lot of his stuff. Whoever it is it's great esp the little flurries towards the end.
Hendrix released stuff on the pickwick label here in the UK, Curtis Knight era stuff but I don't think it's him either. Something about the style is so familiar but I can't quite put a name to it.
That makes it two of us! :)
I feel the same - it's embarassing!!! ;)
Here's another hint..
Pickwick released a 'capitol records series' which had a couple less songs on each.. so it was likely originally released on Capitol... the genre that this player finally entered (and is still in 40 years later) was Not rock or blues... and he's known as a phenom guitarist..
The reason I picked this tune is it's
so different from what he's known for..
After your clue and a bit of research...Glen Campbell?
closer.. but n cigar..yet
How about Tommy Tedesco?
Nope...but i sure like all Tommy's Beach Boys albums... hey, didn't the beach boys actually have a guitarist? I wonder how he spent his time when they went in the studio ;-)
OK.. so maybe that's a little mean ;(...
But most of the early BB platters *are* Carol Kaye and Tommy...
Have you noticed how most of the hundreds of 60's surf records sound like they've got the same guy playing lead?
;)
hmmm i wonder what Tommy Tedesco wuz doing back in those days?
He was called 'The most recorded guitarist in the world' and the Wrecking Crew played on tons of stuff. Two more guesses are Jim Mcguinn or Billy Strange. I've got the Stones stuff, I am just interested in the challenge of who the hell this is.
Well, shucks, partna, i coulda guessed that..
That's why i been leavin ole clues now, y'hear , stead o pokin my head thru the straw an givin it away...
'Fraid i sold the farm this time...
Sure you'll git it now!
You're clue indicates that this guy is still alive, otherwise my next guess would be Chet Atkins, although if not because it sounds nothing like what he is famous for...
Probably dead wrong, but wtf, just like the Reverend, I wanna know.... :)
hey i dont know if hes alive, in fact... but yall are gettin soo close.. c'mon.. man.. yer makin me itch ;)
I gotta shut the box down for a day.. think a HD is about to go..gettin annoying 'beeps'.
Back in a while...
found the beep.. HD is safe, so far...
I was gonna throw in Chet Atkins next. It's gotta be some kind of country picker if we're getting close so how about James Burton?
You're out in the UK, right? so maybe you never got some of those old '60s tv shows in the states....
I'm adding a second one.. he used to this one at his gigs all the time....
Sorry but same problem as before, any chance of putting it up as a download?
That's bizarre.. it's an embedded audio file that should play on whatever plugin you have.. and it should BE downloadable just by right clicking and 'save as'.. will add it to the links at the bottom of the page , however, anyways...
Roy Clark!
Hyuk.. what took ya so long??
Of course it's roy...
Can you e-mail the cigar then? A Jamaican one would be nice!
Working on that one... technology lags behind....
Am uploading Grand Prix anyways in case u want it.. my word is good , after all! besides.. it's also the 'runner-up prize!
I must admit that Roy Clark is very obscure to me, hence the difficulty in getting it. I am at work which may explain the problems with listening to stuff. All I get on this computer is an outline of the box with a red cross in it. Cheers Doc, I've discovered another guitarist that I did'nt really know.
Congrats! Glad the mystery is finally not a mystery any longer!!!
Good work - ....and hell yeah, that was a tricky one!
